Cathodic protection (CP) is a technique to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it work as a cathode of an electrochemical cell. This is achieved by placing in contact with the metal to be protected another more easily corroded metal to act as the anode of the electrochemical cell. Cathodic protection systems are most commonly used to protect steel, water or fuel pipelines and storage tanks, steel pier piles, ships, offshore oil platforms and onshore oil well casings.
Cathodic protection can be, in some cases, an effective method of preventing stress corrosion cracking.
To connect the these two metals a special cable is used with special high tech insulation which is called High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (HMW-PE) Cathodic Protection Cables, 600 Volts, Single Conductor, Stranded Copper which is
• Suitable for direct burial and cold temperature applications
• Chemical, oil and moisture resistant
• Crush and abrasion resistant
• Sunlight resistant
• Use in Cathodic systems to protect against galvanic and electrolytic corrosion of underground or submerged metallic objects
• Maximum continuous conductor temperature: 75°C DRY
A direct earth burial DC feeder cable for use in cathodic protection systems, for storage tanks, pipelines, wells, vessels and metallic structures either buried or water submerged that provides excellent abrasion, crush, chemical, oil and moisture resistance. Designed for use in Cathodic systems to protect against galvanic and electrolytic corrosion of underground or submerged metallic objects. These cables are designed to provide protection by acting as a DC feeder cable to electrically charged metallic structures. The negative potential applied to these structures offsets the natural effects of electrolysis and corrosion which would otherwise occur.
The Cable construction made of a conductor wich is an Annealed, uncoated, stranded copper conductor conforms to ASTM Specification B-8 with Insulation that is high molecular weight polyethylene conforming to ASTM D-1248, Type 1, Class A, Category 5, Grades E4 & E5, Tensile Strengths Jl, J3, with high density polyethylene (Types II, III, IV) Class B & C.
